i’m now the proud owner…..
of a 5 cubic foot chest freezer! we went to sam’s club today, bought a freezer, and a bunch of bulk meat. it really took a long time to decide what to buy, what to use it for, etc. although ryan talked me into purchases like 30lbs of shoestring french fries, 5lb block of sharp chedder cheese, and a box of super pretzels, i think we did really well!
So, i’m moving my washer and dryer over to make room for the freezer in my laundry room right off the kitchen and garage (instead of putting the thing down in the basement which is a demilitarized cat zone!!!) so that’ll make it easier to get to. i’m also going to be cooking up a couple pounds of ground beef to freeze for future use (sloppy joes, taco meat, pasta sauce). tomorrow i’ll be cooking up a pork shoulder in our crockpot and have it all seasoned up for shredded pork tacos, which will all be bagged and frozen in family sized packets. and i get to cook a huge batch of pasta sauce in the crock pot on tuesday or wednesday, and freezing that into family sized packets.
overall, it wasn’t as expensive as i thought! the chest freezer was only $143. and we got a bunch of reduced price meat because it had to be cooked or frozen today. which it will be! so that was a little added bonus! yeah!
in knitting news, i tried switching to english to knit some socks now, and it feels like it’s taking forever. instead, i’m going to play with how i hold my yarn in my left hand so i can get more tension and tighten up the stitches. we’ll see how it goes.
right now, if i knit continental, my hands are tense, but my stitches are loose. if i knit english, my hands are more relaxed, but my stitches are tight.
who knew knitting could be so frickin complicated???!!!!

I’ve got 2 books that will help you with your cook ahead – save money plan. I bought these books 20 years ago and used them ALOT! They’re still available as sued books so you can get them really cheap (more savings). Below is the Amazon link for one of them. They are “Make a Mix” and “More Make a Mix” from HP books. You basicaly make a big batch of starter mix for baking, meat, etc. Freeze, store in cupboard or what ever is proper for the mix type. I used the Bisquick mix still. Then there are several recipes using each starter. I used them all the time when I needed to save money. I think I should get them out again!

I also have a book for you to try. It is called Dream Dinners and it is 100 recipes for you to make ahead and freeze. Between my mom, mother-in-law and sister-in-law we have tried quite a few and they are good. I love my chest freezer. Good Luck!
Hi Meghan. I jsut listened to one of your podcasts. I don’t even remember which it was, but it was a first for me. Oh it’s the one where you interviewed Emily from France. i lived in paris last fall, so I enjoyed that interview. It made me kind of wish I was back there again, though.
I switched about 10 or more years ago to continental from English knitting. I prefer it that way now, but am comfortable doing it either way. It took me about 3 years, I would say to become more comfortable with the continental method, but I’m glad I switched. It is faster especially for doing knit and purl stitches int he same row. It will take you a while to figure out how to do the purl stitches. i do them differently than how I’ve seen others do it, but it works very well for me.
The funny thing about the term continental is that the French don’t knit that way. They knit English! The Germans and probably other Europeans knit continental, but I think the name is a bit of a mis-nomer, since it doesn’t apply to France. All the French knitters I met carried the yarn in their right hand.
Now the English have a really unusual way of holding the needle. Thye hold them like a pencil. Can you imagine that? I saw some video and I saw three women knitting that way and I still can’t imagine how one coule learn that way.
