Megan, just listed to this podcast again as I want to try the "potatoes in a bag", just wasn't clear if the bag needed drainage of any sort. Can you send me the link to this method..I didn't see it here. Thanks for the help.
Oh, by the way, here is a hint for you, if you burn a candle close to the onion when you slice it, it burns off the gases of an onion and you won't cry! Try it.

I just started listening to your podcast, and had to let you know that I'm enjoying it! I have an almost 4 YO running around my house, as well as a veggie garden in the front yard and three new chickens out back. And we live in town on a small lot, so I get the need for space considerations.

We've had great luck planting blueberries in containers. Everyone who sees out set up is sold on it so definitely give it a shot. Here's the link I was given at the garden store regarding planting info:

http://www.davewilson.com/homegrown/promotion/bluecontainer.html

Regarding your confusion about all the different varieties of veggies and plants, I hear you! I love looking at seed catalogs, but usually get my starts and ideas from local commercial nurseries (not big retail places that have their stock shipped in from who knows where!). Since they are local, and if they sell primarily locally, they only grow plants that do well in your climate. We have a couple of organic nurseries in our area that only sell at the farmer's market or wholesale, and they're a really great resource for determining what will and will not do well in our area.

Hope that helps!

Meghan,

Enjoy the sabbatical--I know that we all miss your good cheer. Your conversion of the basement has given us a few ideas, but the area near the windows I was hoping to make a fiber area, is becoming the seed starting location again. My husband has built a series of light racks and we will do another round of seedlings this year. Another great company for seeds and good information is Botanical Interests -- they've got amazing illustrations as well.

Cheers-

Hi Meghan,

I haven't left a comment before but your podcast is one of my favorites. I look forward to hearing from you the end of the month.

A couple recommendations: Square Foot Gardening... great help in getting the most from your space. Natural Gardening Company www.naturalgardening.com [I've ordered from them], Gardener's Supply Company www.gardeners.com [I have used them and also purchased gift cards for Christmas gifts], Herb Companion - magazine, and I picked up a new magazine called Grow Veggies put out by Birds & Blooms. Enjoy

1- enjoy your vacation, you deserve it!!!!!
2- i love the outlander audiobooks, now i have to re-listen to them!
3- an excellent seed catalog is seeds of change, http://www.seedsofchange.com/, all organic seeds and excellent customer service. You should check out a book called 'square foot gardening' by mel bartholomew, it has great info on getting the most yield in small spaces.

Hi Meghan!
I am new to your podcast & LOVING it! I feel like I have a new friend!
I love the whole cookbook section this podcast! My dad always cooked out of Joy of Cooking & my mom out of Better Home & Garden and Betty Crocker!
So a few years back I asked for those cookbooks for Christmas from them!
I love to make a huge batch of Betty Crockers chicken pot pie & and then freeze them flat ;) I also get the pie crusts & freeze those - makes for some easy meals! :)

I have a 4 year old son so it is fun to listen to your stories!

Thanks for the podcast!

Hi Meghan, I truly enjoy listening to your podcast. I think I'm starting to like the Townhomesteading part the best (and this yarncraft-a-holic can't even believe I've said that). I've gotten all the soup ingredients and plan to give it a go tomorrow morning. The 'kids' are coming and it sounds easy and maybe a new favorite! Enjoy your break, we all need one sometimes! Annette b.

Meghan, I also have a problem with raglans--too many increases (or decreases) required within the allotted distance between neck and bust. My solution was to use a smaller needle size at the neck and shoulders and gradually increase needle size. That way I get more rows to the inch at the top where I need them, then return to a "normal" row gauge for the body. Maybe that would help?
