A Date?!

Published by Meghan under Babble,Spinning

Believe it or not, I’m going on a date tonight! well, it’s actually a date with my husband. i had a rough week full of stress, and he decided we need to get out and spend some quality time together. so he has arranged for his parents to watch owen for us, and bought tickets to an afternoon showing of Spiderwick Chronicles. Then we are going out for dinner. No idea where, but i’m going to put my foot down and say we CAN’T have portillos or bbq. honestly? i could really go for a good steak. mmmm….that sounds good. mmmmmmmmm…..
oh, sorry…..steak dream.
anyway, to honor the occasion, i’m showered, have some makeup on, and i’m wearing a corduroy skirt, cute white tights, and ballet flats. ain’t i just so cute? hahaha. i feel a combo of spunky and dainty. and more like myself then i’ve felt in a while. anyway, i’m excited about going out. yes, we’ll be home before owen goes to bed so i can give him a snuggle, but ya know what? i probably last an hour after he’s in bed anyway. hahaha

in spinning news, i’ve gotten my 3rd version of my SOAR essay written up…and i’m going to relook at it again tonight. might even send it out to a couple volunteers to get their opinion. i’m not 100% how to go about this whole thing. naturally, some dorky commentary and a nerdy swing on it came into play. but that’s the meghan way of doing things!
for those pretty batts down there, i got an idea yesterday….what if i plied them together?!?! i bet that would look and feel AWESOME! i’d LOVE to make a simple LONG skinny scarf to wear out of that yarn….hmmmmm. i’ve also been working on spinning some combed top, which has been awesome. can i just say how much fun top is to spin? so silky and smooth!
i have a possible spinning date tomorrow. a coffee shop rendezvous with a spinner i met online. we’ll see. we’ve been trying to get something lined up for a few weeks now. it’ll be neat and i’m sure fun if it happens!

gotta get the house picked up for my in-laws! hope you are all having happy (and WARMER then me) Saturdays!

My Favorite Thing:
Peanut butter cookies and my cookie scoop

Peanut Butter Cookies
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup packed brown sugar or 1/4 cup honey
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (I use 1/2 whole wheat flour and 3/4 all-purpose flour)

1. In a large mixing bowl beat the butter and peanut butter on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add the granulated sugar, brown sugar, baking powder and baking soda. Beat till combined. Beat in the egg and vanilla till combined. Gradually mix in flour (switch to mixing by hand if needed).

2. Shape dough into 1-inch balls, place on an ungreased (use parchment paper!) cookie sheet and flatten by making a crisscross marks with the tines of a fork. Bake in an 375 degree oven for 7-9 minutes or till bottoms are lightly browned.

What’s in a Name?

Published by Meghan under Babble

well, Erin had this on her blog, and i was curious…so i did it too…and i have to say, it’s pretty good. i especially like the paranoia thing, because i AM pretty paranoid and enjoy worry…i do love to learn….i wouldn’t say i have a “type A” personality (i think sales person when i see that) but, i guess i kinda do in other people’s eyes….with all of the Vinegar converts, i guess i DO have a some sales skills. hahahaha

What Meghan Marie Means

You are confident, self assured, and capable. You are not easily intimidated.
You master any and all skills easily. You don’t have to work hard for what you want.
You make your life out to be exactly how you want it. And you’ll knock down anyone who gets in your way!
You are friendly, charming, and warm. You get along with almost everyone.
You work hard not to rock the boat. Your easy going attitude brings people together.
At times, you can be a little flaky and irresponsible. But for the important things, you pull it together.

You are deeply philosophical and thoughtful. You tend to analyze every aspect of your life.
You are intuitive, brilliant, and quite introverted. You value your time alone.
Often times, you are grumpy with other people. You don’t appreciate them trying to interfere in your affairs.

You are truly an original person. You have amazing ideas, and the power to carry them out.
Success comes rather easily for you… especially in business and academia.
Some people find you to be selfish and a bit overbearing. You’re a strong person.

You are usually the best at everything … you strive for perfection.
You are confident, authoritative, and aggressive.
You have the classic “Type A” personality.

You are very intuitive and wise. You understand the world better than most people.
You also have a very active imagination. You often get carried away with your thoughts.
You are prone to a little paranoia and jealousy. You sometimes go overboard in interpreting signals.

You are wild, crazy, and a huge rebel. You’re always up to something.
You have a ton of energy, and most people can’t handle you. You’re very intense.
You definitely are a handful, and you’re likely to get in trouble. But your kind of trouble is a lot of fun.

You tend to be pretty tightly wound. It’s easy to get you excited… which can be a good or bad thing.
You have a lot of enthusiasm, but it fades rather quickly. You don’t stick with any one thing for very long.
You have the drive to accomplish a lot in a short amount of time. Your biggest problem is making sure you finish the projects you start.

What’s Your Name’s Hidden Meaning?

then i was curious and ran owen’s name….and this one caught my eye:
“You are very charming… dangerously so. You have the potential to break a lot of hearts.
You know how what you want, how to get it, and that you will get it.” if that doesn’t say it all, then i don’t know what else you could say.

Happy Easter!!!

Published by Meghan under Babble,Crochet,Spinning

I didn’t dye eggs this year to celebrate the festivities….i dyed some roving instead. i busted out my wilton’s food coloring and dyed up small batches of roving so i can make some colorful handspun. here are my “fiber eggs” after they were microwaved.
easter (fiber) eggs

i managed to finish ALL 4 chicks for easter! (yeah! go me!) and they were well received by all of the little hands they were gifted to. here are the chicks chilling in our window.

and as promised, here is the photos of my handspun i plied with thread. i tried to make it bumpy, but it didn’t turn out so hot. i’ve done one since this batch (after poking through Intertwined at borders…and it’s a little better. so here’s the first attempt:
lumpy practice yarn
reminds me of lionbrand homespun yarn. hahaha.

bob is now home from the vet. he’s still not feeling 100%, but he’s in good spirits. still trying to get a full stream when he pees, but is otherwise happy. i sure enjoyed having him sleep on my back and purring in my ear last night! :) welcome home, bob!!!

spinning guild meets tomorrow night…i hope to go! hope i don’t need a cape…i didn’t get around to making one with all of the bob stuff we had going on.

Episode 14: “Snakes on the Rocks”

okay, first up, i’m sorry. i’ve been horrible about getting show notes posted in a reasonable amount of time. from this day forward i’ll definitely try to get the show notes up with the podcast. no real banter this past week, because every waking moment is spent worrying about a kitty. i’ll return to normal soon (i hope!)

Episode 14: “Snakes on the Rocks”

Thank you to everyone for your support and kind words about Bob.

-Plying with thread….Here is what i was hoping my yarn would look like…Here’s what mine looked like…well i can’t find my camera cord, so i’ll post it tonight! hahha
-Stitches….lots of anxiety about going, and do they have fiber?!?!
Drop Spindles:
-don’t buy one on ebay
-an even spin is good!!! look for that! wobbles are bad!
-Article on Top vs Bottom whorl spindles
-Schacht Spindle
-Butterflygirl Designs beautiful drop spindles, great customer service.
-Ann Grout Spindles hand designed ceramic spindles done by an Irish historian. Beautiful!
-Spinsanity Spindles handpainted beautiful drop spindles.
-Bosworth Spindles feeling spendy? go for a bosworth. supposed to be one of the best spindles available.
-BFL or Bluefaced Leicester and Corriedale are both great! long staple lengths and enough crimp to make it easy!!!

My Favorite Thing:
I love my Mac computers. It knows when i plug things into them, my mac will know what it is and know what to do with it. i plug in a printer, it works. i plug in my camera, it opens iphoto and it starts pulling my pictures. it’s SMART!!! they are a bit more pricey, but honestly, WELL worth the investment because you won’t fight it and it’ll last a LOT longer!!!!

dyed in the wool

dyed in the wool

ain’t it perty?!?!
-want to try beaded yarn
-Spinning yarn from different clumps of colored roving to create a cool multicolor yarn!

How to Make a Lazy Kate:
supplies: shoe box, 6 knitting needles or dowels
-Insert knitting needles through the box in this design. make sure the two ouside needles are high enough that your bobbin will have room to spin on them (ie. if they’re bigger bobbins, move the needle on the far left and far right higher up)
lazy kate
lazy kate

-When you put your bobbin onto the holding needles (the two outside needles), be sure that the yarn is coming off of the bottom of the bobbin. if it comes off of the top, it won’t tension correctly. with the yarn (coming off of the bottom of the bobbin, right?) go up and over the next needle, then down and under the final needle. do a mirror image of this on the other side, and you’re ready to ply!
lazy kate

Run out of bobbins? NO PROBLEM! wind your singles onto a toilet paper tube! fortunately, these work in the make shift lazy kate as well!!! either wind them by hand, or if your winder lets you, wind them straight onto the toilet paper tube:
winding onto toilet paper tube

i actually wind mine straight off the spinning wheel’s bobbin without the brake line on, or if i want to make it easier, i load the bobbin into my lazy kate box and wind from there because it’s tensioned! yeah!!!

now, don’t you feel smart?!?!

My Favorite Thing:
I have naturally curly hair, and i LOVE LOVE LOVE Jessicurl Hair Products. I’ve been using these same products for about 9 or 10 months now, and i love it! owen and i both use it. i don’t spend money on random products anymore that just get used once and live under my sink full. I love the Gentle Lather Shampoo, Rocking Ringlets Styling Solutions, and Confident Coils. For my conditioner, I just use Natures Gate Aloe Conditioner.
You Have the Right to Remain Curly
-other tricks, Shampoo only a scalp and finger comb suds through your hair. your hair will be less dry, smoother and shinier. otherwise, rinse with cold water upside down at the end of your shower. and i totally suggest “Plopping” or “Plunking”. Check out the videos they are extremely helpful!!!
okay, enough hair stuff!!!

the interview is on wednesday morning, and already i’m anxious! isn’t that ridiculous? i guess i shouldn’t be.  it’s either they will think i’m a perfect fit, or they don’t….the more i think about it, the more and more i think this is that whole fate thing….fate is giving me a chance to do something i love…just whether or not i will make it happen.

might mean money will be tight for a long time…but wouldn’t it bet better to be broke, but in a happy, rewarding job close to home that will, above all others, understand my situation with owen’s hearing loss and support me being available for signing lessons? just feels like this job is the culmination of all my mommy/schooling/work experience….

there i go again, with that cart before the horse! ahh well…

in the spinning world, i finished spinning the second half of my sugar plum sock yarn over the weekend, fashioned myself a new lazy kate (i’ll talk more about that in this week’s episode), and plan on plying the yarn tomorrow during the little man’s nap…lets hope it goes well! i’m so anxious to see how the colors will blend, and yet terrified it’ll look like puke, poo, or both!!

i also found a thread on ravelry talking about beaded yarn, and i’m keen to give it a try! maybe with that romney i have in my stash? ohhhh….so tempting!!!  i’ll need to stop by the craft store tomorrow for some beads…and some metallic thread….hmmmmm

the second sock is underway!!! i still am loving this blueberry waffle pattern. so simple, but great results! one of those stitches that looks more complicated then it really is!
